Aging is a part of life, but you don’t have to settle for looking older than your age. Developing healthy habits, including drinking more water, can help prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Water is essential for your body’s functions, including keeping your skin supple and moist; in some ways, water is the ultimate anti-aging treatment. When you’re dehydrated, your skin may be dry and prone to cracking. If you struggle to remember to drink water, start toting a water bottle around with you everywhere you go.
Treat Your Skin Gently
Scratching and rubbing at your face and the rest of your skin can cause damage. If you have a rash or bug bite, treat it with an ointment instead of incessantly scratching at it. If you have an acne breakout, be sure to avoid touching the affected spots so that you don’t cause further damage. Using special products, including anti-wrinkle creams, can also help your skin to flourish. Apply skin products gently to avoid accidental damage.
Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure
Although the sun may feel wonderful on your face, the UV rays can damage your skin and cause your appearance to age prematurely. Each time you go outside, wear sunblock to protect your skin from baking. If you’re outside for an extended period, don’t forget to reapply your sunblock periodically. You should also use a waterproof sunblock if you plan to swim. If you want to avoid relying on sunscreen whenever you go outside, consider covering up your skin with loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat. You can wear gloves to protect your hands.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Rest gives your body the chance to recover and rejuvenate itself. Keeping to a regular bedtime and getting at least eight hours of sleep each night can give your body the rest it needs. Getting enough sleep is also a great way to help reduce stress levels; high stress levels can affect your body in a number of ways, including premature aging.
Eat Healthy Foods
Choosing healthy foods to eat gives your body the nutrients it needs to continually repair your skin. This includes foods such as fresh vegetables, nuts and fruits. Avoiding junk food, including processed crisps, can also help your skin.
Eliminate Unhealthy Habits
Unhealthy habits, including smoking and excessive drinking, can affect your appearance. Smoking deprives your skin of oxygen and can affect the collagen in your skin and hair, causing parts of your face to wrinkle and sag prematurely and your hair to thin. Alcohol is a diuretic and will cause you to dehydrate at an accelerated rate. It can also interfere with your body’s ability to process nutrients that are necessary for keeping your skin smooth. Drinking water in between sips of an alcoholic beverage can counteract the dehydrating effects of alcohol.
Although it’s impossible to stop all signs of aging in your body, you can make an effort to prevent some of the effects. Making your health a priority in your daily life is a good way to start.
